After a soaking rain over the weekend, we are drying out today, but the clouds are hanging tough; and due to the clouds and an already cool air mass, temperatures are holding in the upper 40s and low 50s this afternoon. Our average high for this time of year is 56. We remain cloudy and chilly tonight; morning lows fall to the upper 30s, then partial clearing during the day Tuesday; but even with some sunshine, afternoon temperatures remain in the upper 40s and low 50s as colder air slips in from the north.
Of course, all eyes are focused on midweek for New Year's activities... Wednesday morning/New Year's Eve morning will begin very cold; most spots drop into the upper 20s by sunrise. During the day, we're expecting a good supply of sunshine, but chilly with highs in the upper 40s along with a cold north breeze; areas in extreme South Mississippi will likely reach the low 50s.
For New Year's Day, morning lows fall to the upper 20s and low 30s, followed by another cool afternoon; temperatures reach the low 50s in South Mississippi and upper 40s over the northern 2/3rd's of the state. Also, clouds increase throughout the day as moisture returns in advance of system that will lead to a wet and stormy weekend. A few showers are possible late in the day Thursday (New Year's Day), but as of now, most spots remain dry.
Rain becomes more widespread Friday as a series of disturbances swing through. Then, as the main upper level trough approaches, a warm front blows in from south to north Friday evening and night, delivering warmer, moist/unstable air. While it's still early in the game, we'll need to at least mention the potential for a round of strong to severe storms during the day Saturday... The details will become more clear as the week rolls along, and we'll keep you posted!
